I always see the ads on Facebook for white water rafting at Zoar Outdoor. Its been on my bucket list for a while. So we decided to try it out as a last hoorah before school. We were so excited! Zoar Outdoor is New England’s leader in outdoor adventure offering the full adventure resort experience with white water rafting, zip lining, kayaking, paddle boarding, and more. They even had lodging. The resort is in Charlemont, MA located inside the Berkshires. You will raft down the gorgeous Deerfield River.
The kids and I woke up early and headed out to the beautiful Berkshires super excited for our day. When you arrive at Zoar Outdoor you are greeted by Mark. You will love Mark! Then you have to check in and grab the gear you will need to hit the river. Here is our first piece of advice. Absolutely rent the water booties and the blue water jacket. You will thank us later. Do not make the mistake of wearing cotton. You wont be able to wear it on the river. Wear only synthetic clothing! Also, be smart wear shorts not pants if its in the summer. Wearing pants kept me colder because they were wet. If I had worn shorts the sun would have dried up my legs.
After you pick up your river wear you will sit down to watch a ten minute video on river safety. Either you’ll be terrified or laugh.
After you watched the video you are assigned your guide and head over to get your rafting gear! You will look very official.
After you get all your gear you get to drive up the river to start your rafting experience!
When we hit the river the first thing our guide Davis explained to us was how to measure the capacity of the water. He used the analogy of picturing 800 chickens running down the river at once to explain 800 cubic feet of water. I got it.
On the river you will be treated to a gorgeous view of the Berkshire Mountains that I would show you but you are not allowed to take your camera on the raft.
We thoroughly enjoyed lunch. Rafters get the chance to stop for a lunch in a picturesque field. It was beautiful. Your taste buds will be delighted by the taste of homemade salsa and black bean dip on tortilla chips before you get to make your own wrap. The home made salsa was SLAMMING! So so good.
The Zoar experience is about 10 miles long. Its mostly a class 1 and 2 rapid river. It is a great river for beginners especially those with littles. During your raft trip you will learn to surf your raft. Picture the river taking over your raft from the front. You will get to enter a splash war with other rafters. You will also get a couple chances to float down the river. Its a beautiful way to spend the day.
The most challenging part of the river is the Zoar Gap. Its a class 3 rapid and it was SO fun! Our faces so it all. It was a great combination of relaxation raft ride and a white water challenge. Our guide was awesome! He was very knowledgeable about the river and its history. It was apparent he cared very much about the river and making sure our experience was perfect. Thanks Davis! He was a bonus on our trip.
Well we had an amazing day white water rafting at @zoaroutdoor. I really wish I couldve taken my camera on the ride to capture the fun all the kids had especially them floating down the river. We learned to surf a raft! We even had lunch in a gorgeous spot in the mountains. Stay tuned for what we thought about our experience. #whitewaterrafting #adventureswithmom #berkshires #adventure #blogger #whitewater
Before we knew it our river tour was over. We ended the day just as we started it with complimentary hot chocolate! It was definitely needed by the end of the day cause we were chilly! AND WET!!!
We highly recommend Zoar Outdoor for your first white water rafting experience especially with little ones. The venue was clean and beautiful. The staff clearly cared about the river and its patrons. It was a wonderful experience.
